The moniker

djplaeskool. So, back in 2003, a friend and I were planning a little get-together at his parents place. I had just purchased my first set of turntables and a number of assorted vinyls, so he thought it'd be cool to setup shop and provide a little atmosphere. Well, at that time, I didn't have a hallowed DJ name. We bounced some ideas back and forth, but nothing stuck out. Riding in his car after stopping by a Wendy's (where he managed) I noticed something stuck to the bottom of my shoe...a sticker from one of those "For Kids 3 and under" toys, with the company logo plastered on the top..."PLAYSKOOL"
Well, I had my name...with a slight alteration (ae), because let's face it, the ash grapheme is cool.
In regards to the letters dj in front, the proper spelling is as above, no space. the term "DJ" nowadays has so much connotation that it has very little meaning. Since my body of work consists of very little actual disc jockeying, when I first made the site, I reduced it to just, "djplaeskool" or also "DJplaeskool" as a more proper name. "DJ Plaeskool" makes it sound like I tour, or do gigs for hire, or something like that, which is not the case at all. I have a full-time job (which pays well) and never from the start did I have the intention of doing this as an actual profession. Some say that's no way to operate, but believe me when I say I cherish this as a recreation. I used to do this moreso for myself than for others, but you all are a major motivation, and I thank you all profusely for the support over the years.

A Bulleted History

  • I got my start actually producing music, believe it or not, with FFXI ('sup FFXIOnline.com folks)...
  • I spliced together the bard music sound effects, and people were like, "Hey that's cool, add a beat to it..."
  • So I did, and it sounded goofy, but people were all like, "MOAR..."
  • So I kept going (2003 FFXI remixes) and it still sounded goofy, but people seemed to enjoy it all...but in the process, became more interested in making original works...
  • So I kept going...and people still wanted more FFXI stuff (2004)...
  • So I kept going...Here is where I think my true genesis as an artist was. In 2005, it became more than just screwing around...
  • and then there was a haze of this that or the other (2005 - early 2006) where I didn't really focus much on improving my technique, just on variance...
  • So I kept going...and flexed my originality muscle a bit (Decrying the Ellipsis), and people enjoyed it...
  • So I kept going...and after a few requests or a more musically target body of work, I delivered (Nagare) and people enjoyed it...
  • So I kept going...and developed a concept, and produced it (Borealisse) and people enjoyed it...
  • A pattern emerges.
  • As long as people enjoy what I do and what I make, I will keep going.
